There is no doubt in the historical record that Sri Guru Gobind Singh jee gave the eternal Guruship to Sri Guru Granth Sahib in 1708.
The strongest proof for this historical fact comes from the eyewitness account of Bhatt Narbad Singh. Bhatt Narbad Singh was a companion of the Guru’s court and a kavi (poet) who recorded the event:
ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਹਲ ਦਸਮਾ, ਬੇਟਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਜੀ ਕਾ, ਪੋਤਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਜੀ ਕਾ,ਪੜਪੋਤਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਕਾ, ਬੰਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮ ਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਕੀ, ਸੂਰਜਬੰਸੀ ਗੋਸਲ ਗੋਤ ਸੋਢੀ ਖਤਰੀ, ਬਾਸੀ ਅੰਨਦਪੁਰ , ਪਰਗਨਾ ਕਹਲੂਰ,ਮਕਾਮ ਨੰਦੇੜ ਤਟ ਗੁਦਾਵਰੀ, ਦੇਸ ਦਖਣ, ਸਤ੍ਰਾ ਸੈ ਪੈਸਠ ਕਾਰਤਕ ਮਾਧੇ ਸੁਦੀ ਚੌਥ ਸੁਕਲ ਪਖੇ ਬੁਧਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਦਿਹੁੰ ਦਯਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੇ ਬਚਨ ਹੋਯਾ “ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲੈ ਆਉ” ਬਚਨ ਪਾਇ ਦਯਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲੈ ਆਇ ।ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਪਾਚ ਪੈਸੇ ਏਕ ਨਲੀਏਰ ਭੇਟ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਾਥਾ ਟੇਕਾ । ਸਰਬ ਸੰਗਤ ਸੇ ਕਹਾ, ‘ਮੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੈ ।ਮੇਰੀ ਜਗਾ ਸੀ੍ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਜੀ ਕੋ ਜਾਨਨਾ । ਜੋ ਸਿੱਖ ਜਾਨੇਗਾ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ਥਾਇ ਪਏਗੀ । ਗੁਰੂ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਬਾਹੁੜੀ ਕਰੇਗਾ । ਸਤਿ ਕਰ ਮਾਨਨਾ” । (ਭਟ ਵਹੀ ਤਲੋਂਡਾ ਪਰਗਨਾ ਜੀਂਦ)
Bhatt jee describes how Sri Guru Gobind asked Bhai Daya Singh to bring the saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and then in front of the entire sangat, bowed with an offering of a coconut and 5 paisas, announcing that from that point onwards, the Guru would be Sri Guru Granth sahib.
The next oldest proof comes from Bhai Sohan Singh Gulati who wrote Gurbilas Patshahi Chevin in 1718, after hearing the account from Bhai Mani Singh. He writes that Guru Gobind Singh said the following:
ਗੁਰਿਆਈ ਕਾ ਨਹਿ ਅਬ ਕਾਲ।
ਤਿਲਕ ਨ ਦੇਵਹਿਗੇ ਕਿਸ ਭਾਲ।੯੬।
…ਯਾ ਸਮ ਔਰ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਹੀ।
ਬਿਨਾ ਕਨ ਸਚੁ ਬਾਕ ਭਨਾਹੀ ।੧੦੧।
ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੈ ਹਿਚਾ ਧਾਰੇ।
ਤਾ ਬਿਨ ਚਾਹ ਨਾ ਧਰੋ ਪਿਯਾਰੇ।
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਵਾਂਛਾ ਸਬ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ।
ਯਾ ਪਰ ਨਿਸਚਾ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਸਭ ਦੂਰੈ।੧੩੬।
ਮਮ ਅਗਿਆ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਸੁਨੇ ਸਤਿ ਕਚਨ ਨਿਰਧਾਰ ।
ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮ ਮਾਨੀਓ ਭੇਦ ਨਾ ਕੋਊ ਬਿਚਾਰ ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਕਲਜੁਗ ਭਸੋ ਸੀ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਰੂਪ ਮਹਾਨ ।
ਦਸ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਂਹੀਆਂ ਰੂਪ ਇਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਜੀ ਜਾਨ ।
Guru Gobind Singh clearly says here that he will not find a human to place the tilak of Guru. There is no other Guru but Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the embodiment of the 10 Gurus.
Gur Sobha 1741 records the following conversation:
ਗਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਹਵਾਲ।
ਬਚਨ ਕੀਤਾ: ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਲੜ ਪਕੜੋ ਅਕਾਲ॥੬੭੯॥
ਆਪਸ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪੰਥ ਦੇ ਵਾਧੇ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਚਣਾ।
ਆਗਿਆ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਖੋਜਣਾ॥੬੭੦॥
Clearly Guru Sahib here declared Sri Guru Granth Sahib the Guru and ordered the Khalsa to take its direction from the Shabad.
Bhai Nand Lal, the court poet of Guru Gobind Singh records in his rehitnama:
ਮੇਰੋ ਰੂਪ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਜੀ ਜਾਣ ।
ਇਸ ਮੈਂ ਭੇਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੁਛ ਮਾਨ । (ਰਹਿਤਨਾਮਾ ਭਾਈ ਨੰਦ ਲਾਲ)
Kesar Singh Chhibber in Bansavalinama (1769) writes:
ਦਸਵਾਂ ਪਾਤਸਾਹ ਗੱਦੀ ਗੁਰਿਆਈ ਦੀ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਹੈ ਗਿਆ। ਅੱਜ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਸਾਡਾ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਹੈ। ਸੋਈ ਗਿਆ ਜੋ ਗ੍ਰੰਥੋ ਗਿਆ।੨੬੪।
Pothi Gurbilas records:
ਰੂਪ ਇਕਾਦਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਬਰ ਤਾਂ ਛਿਨ ਸੀ੍ ਆਏ ।
ਪੈਸੇ ਪਾਂਚ ਨਰੇਲ਼ ਰਾਖੈ ਕਰ ਗੁਰਿਆਂਈ ਸੁਧਰਾਏ ।
ਮਮ ਪੂਜਨ ਸੇਵਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਹਿ ਬੋਲਨ ਬਾਨੀ ਬਚਨਾ ।
ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਨ ਮੋਰ ਯਹ ਮੰਜੀ ਰੂਪ ਇਕਦਸਿ ਜਚਨਾ ।
